Editorial & Platform Mission
At Michael, we believe the next era of high-leverage technical mastery requires an unbreakable bridge between rigorous pedagogical design and hyper-resilient engineering execution. Over 5 million active practitioners, researchers, and enterprise engineers turn to Michael's curriculum sandboxes daily to practice distributed database failovers, build generative AI model runtimes, and simulate production incident recoveries.
As a Senior Platform & Systems Engineer, you will lead the core architecture powering Michael's micro-VM sandboxes and real-time interactive evaluation pipelines. You will design sub-100ms environment provisioning systems that execute untrusted code securely at planetary scale, enabling students and enterprise teams to touch bare-metal concepts without leaving their editorial workspace.
Key Responsibilities
- Ephemeral Runtime ArchitectureArchitect, scale, and optimize low-latency container & micro-VM provisioning pipelines (Firecracker, containerd, WebAssembly) capable of spinning up secure code sandboxes in sub-120 milliseconds.
- Pedagogical Feedback EngineBuild asynchronous telemetry streaming and state-machine evaluation nodes that inspect live terminal buffers, AST parses, and test harnesses to give instant, nuanced diagnostic feedback.
- Global Cloud Resilience & Multi-Region OrchestrationDeploy and steward multi-cloud Kubernetes clusters with distributed caching across AWS, GCP, and regional edge nodes ensuring 99.99% availability during university exam windows and global corporate sprints.
- Academic Mentorship & Written RFC CultureChampion Michael's written-first engineering culture. Author rigorous RFCs, mentor junior platform fellows, and regularly review capstone contributions from our graduate alumni community.

Principal Systems Fellow"We treat runtime isolation as an editorial craft. Our goal is to give every learner and researcher the tactile power of a dedicated Linux bare-metal node in milliseconds."
Fellowship Perks & Work Culture
Annual fund dedicated for books, research journals, hardware labs, and attending computing symposiums.
No-meeting Wednesdays and Thursdays. Decisions happen through thoughtfully written RFCs rather than endless video calls.
Full medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents, plus inclusive mental wellness benefits.
All-expenses-paid global team summits in historical learning capitals (Oxford, Kyoto, and Montreal).
